What comes to mind when someone says ‘jump rope’? If you are like most people you think of childhood rope skipping – maybe jumping on one foot, or Double Dutch with friends. But that isn’t the kind of rope skipping that Zawadi Jacob is becoming known for. Zawadi, and several of the other Amani kids, are taking jump rope to new – and competitive – heights!

In November, 2009, Michael Fry, a competitive jump rope champion from the U.S., visited Amani with 100 ropes, a couple of training DVDs, and the goal of teaching children in East Africa how to do more than just the basics of skipping. He spent five days teaching the Amani kids this new sport. Zawadi took to jumping, and its accompanying stunts, immediately, with drive and determination. His commitment to practicing and excelling has paid off. In July 2010 he won four medals at the First Annual East Africa Jumprope Competition in Mombasa, Kenya, including Best Overall.

Zawadi’s success served to fuel his ambition. He was seldom seen without his rope, always ready for a quick couple of turns when the opportunity presented itself. Before long, Zawadi began leading the jump rope team’s afternoon practices. He shows remarkable patience teaching his Amani teammates new stunts and is always ready with words of encouragement if others get frustrated when they make mistakes. When it comes to rope skipping, in all ways Zawadi shines.

Recently Zawadi’s light was shining even wider: he was selected by One World, One Rope, Michael Fry’s organization, to go to the US and participate with more than 350 athletes from 13 countries in competitions, exhibitions and skill-building camps in Washington DC, Cleveland and Seattle. Zawadi proudly earned seven medals, including several first place for speed. Although he competed in the Novice category, Zawadi also brought home the 5th place ribbon in a Senior Division, having achieved higher scores than many seasoned jumpers for a skill called ‘Triple Unders.’

Zawadi loved his experience abroad, and came back even more motivated to excel in his academic studies and his rope skipping. And – while I am writing this – he is already teaching his newest skills to the other children in the Amani jump rope team. Jumping for joy, indeed!
